David Ortiz Tested Positive for Steroids; In Other News, the Earth is Round

In news that shocks no one, the New York Times is reporting that David Ortiz was one of the 103 players who tested positive for steroids in 2003. So apparently, lovable Big Papi is a phony and liar. Here’s what he said back in February:

“I think you clean up the game by the testing. I know that if I test positive by using any kind of substance, I know that I’m going to disrespect my family, the game, the fans and everybody, and I don’t want to be facing that situation…”So what would I do? I won’t use it, and I’m pretty sure that everybody is on the same page.”

This shouldn’t come as a surprise since he was a light-hitting nobody with the Twins who became a modern-day Babe Ruth overnight with the Red Sox. If you take a look at his stats you can see a major jump.

With the Twins (6 seasons)
.266 BA, .348 OBP, .461 SLG, 58 HRs

With the Red Sox (7+ seasons)
.290 BA, .390 OBP, 580 SLG, 244 HRs

In 2002, with the Twins, he had a respectable year, batting .272 with 20 HRs, 75 RBI’s and a .500 SLG. In 2003, he made a major jump in all those categories, batting .288 with 31 HRs, 101 RBI’s and a .592 slugging!  His slugging percentage continued to increase through 2006 when he slugged an “amazing” .621. Since 2006 his numbers have been in a landslide. I wonder why?
